Last week I got fitted with contact lenses. These are a special kind of “Scleral” lens , which are designed to ‘vault’ over my cornea and help with a condition I have called Keratoconus.

I was very lucky that my Opticians, Peter Ivins Eyecare in Bearsden were undertaking a learning exercise on fitting a new product and offered me to partake in the learning , in exchange for a fitting.
It was a strange experience; I have never worn lenses before.
The basic process was -> slap a lens in -> do some visual inspection and once close to a good fit , use some more sophisticated equipment to examine it.
I then got to experience the lenses correcting my vision and it was certainly better than with glasses. I look forward to getting the proper lenses shortly and attempting to live without glasses … or at least not proper glasses.
Keratoconus is a frustrating disease and very misunderstood. I ask anyone that hasn’t heard of it to explore it.
